Baby Announcement!

Hello friends! It’s been a while since I have posted, but I thought I would share that our little family is growing by two feet these year. Here are a few of the details about how we announced to our friends and family.

We were able to announce to family at Christmas which was a really fun time to share our exciting news. We wrapped up the ultrasound pictures for my parents to open on Christmas Eve and then the rest of the family that was there could share in the news as well. For our family that was not there we took a little video of Liam holding the ultrasound picture announcing “I’m going to be a big brother!” After we sent the video via text we called to celebrate over the phone with loved ones that are far away.baby #2 announcementOver the next few weeks we told our close friends and in the mean time snapped a few pictures to share on social media. I searched Pinterest many times for announcement ideas and really only found a few ideas for baby number two. I really wanted to include our whole family in the announcement so we kind of adapted the text from some announcements I’d seen online and came up with our own pose. We ended up waiting until I was 16 weeks before sharing on social media. I was so nervous this time around! I think the first time around I was just blissfully ignorant to how fragile the whole process can be. mommy & her babiesNow I am 23 weeks along and hope to share more often about this pregnancy and life in general. In the mean time I hope you all have a happy Monday!

Potty Training Tips

Liam has been making a lot of changes lately and getting to be such a big boy. He recently gave up his binky, which you can read about here. He also moved to a toddler bed which was pretty exciting. But, before we made those changes I was able to get Liam potty trained. It’s pretty impressive since he was completely potty trained including night time just after his second birthday! I am certainly not an expert on potty training as this is my first child but I just wanted to share a few things that worked for us.Potty Training TipsWait until they are ready: Liam got this Sesame Street Elmo Adventure Potty Chair for Christmas and every morning since then I would ask him if he wanted to pee in his potty. He would always say no. But, then he started waking up with a dry diaper and occasionally wanting to sit on his potty. His communication skills also improved. He wouldn’t pee at first but eventually he did. We would try through out the day, usually with accidents so I would wait a bit longer. Then one day it just happened. He said he wanted to go in the potty in the morning and then continued going in the potty for the rest of the day. So, we went out and got some undies with his favorite characters on them and haven’t turned back since.

Find out what daycare is doing: If your child has to spend time away from you it is important to see what program your care provider has in place for potty training. This was crucial for us and I strongly believe the reason we were so successful. Before I even started potty training I spoke with daycare and asked what they do. The program she used was a timer and potty treats. Every morning when I dropped Liam off I let her know when the last time he had gone to the bathroom was. She would then set the kitchen timer at first for every thirty minutes and then slowly spacing it out further. When the timer goes went off she takes the kids to the bathroom and sits them there while they have a drink of water. If they go then they get a small treat like an M&M or a mini cadbury egg. We used this same  method at home so there would be no confusion. We took a long weekend to start potty training before returning to daycare on Monday. You have to get things started and have some success before expecting daycare to take on potty training as well.

Start with sitting for boys: Liam still hasn’t mastered peeing standing up which I am okay with since he isn’t really tall enough and his aim is terrible. Sitting down allows them to go number one or two since it’s sometimes hard to tell at first. We also had Liam sit on the big toilet backwards. This way he does not feel like he is going to fall in and he doesn’t miss and go all over the floor. Don’t get me wrong he still gets it on the floor sometimes but at least this way he can lean forward a bit and get it in rather than trying to hold himself up and point it down. Potty TrainingAsk if they have to go, a lot: We still have accidents from time to time mostly when Liam gets into playing and I forget to ask. He does tell me when he has to go most of the time but I try to pay attention to how long it’s been and if he is making any other signs that he may need to go. The biggest hurtle for us is in the morning and after nap. When he wakes up I know he has to go but he is cranky and fights it. If I don’t get him to go right after waking up he almost always will have an accident. You know your child best, pay close attention to when they avoid going and what signs they make that might indicate they need to go.

Accidents will happen: Kids are going to have accidents, it’s just part of the process. Don’t get mad or discipline them as it will make them afraid of going to the bathroom. If Liam has an accident we talk about why he didn’t tell me he needed to go. If possible I have him help me clean it up. If he poops in his pants and we are home I usually give him a shower which he isn’t a huge fan of but I calmly talk him through it and assure him everything is okay but that we just need to get cleaned up.

These are a few things that worked for us and I hope they will help you along your way. I will say potty training certainly was a test on how much patience I have. There were times when I wish I would have been more patient but over all I think everything worked out well and I am so proud of my little guy. Be sure to be positive, patient, and kind to your little one on this exciting journey. What tips and tricks worked for you?

Friday Favorites – Beauty Products Edition

friday favorites: beauty products It’s Friday, Friday, Friday!!! I am certainly looking forward to the weekend over here. Today I wanted to share some of my current favorite’s in the beauty department. I’ll just start with the fact that while I do wear makeup everyday it is pretty minimal and I don’t spend a lot of time on it. With a toddler underfoot I love having things that make my mornings go quickly. This applies to other areas like nails and shaving as well. So, here are a few of the beauty products that are my current jam.

Benefit Cosmetics They’Re Real! Mascara

After bouncing around from several different mascaras I recently switched over to this brand. I heard so many great reviews on it from friends and co-workers that I had to check it out. I started with the small sample size you can pick up at Sephora and I am totally hooked. My lashes look so much longer and fuller with this mascara. Plus it stays on all day but comes off easily with eye make-up remover. And it isn’t clumpy or flakey. The first day I wore it I got complimented several times that my eyelashes looked amazing. I think I have found my one true mascara love!

E.l.f. BB Cream SPF 20

elf bb creamOkay, so who doesn’t love bb cream in summer? It is so light, usually has sunscreen, and is perfect for the more natural look that goes so well with the casual style summer often brings. During the warmer months my skin is pretty clear with all the sunshine so I just need something light to even out the tone. I love that I can just quickly apply BB Cream with a Sponge Makeup Blender, add some bronzer and mascara, and be on my way. I am currently using the E.l.f. BB Cream  and for the price it is pretty dang great. If you have not tried BB Cream before DO IT!

BB Creme: Make-up for your Nails

orly bb creme

On that same note, I recently discovered that there is now a bb creme for your nails and I am in love! The reality is life is often too busy to sit down and give myself a manicure or make it to the salon. So when I tried the Orly BB Creme for nails I quickly realized it was perfect for me! It only requires one-two coats and it dries super quick. It gives your nails a nice natural nude look with just a little shine. I highly recommend giving this polish a try if you are looking for something subtle for your nails. Here is a bit more information from the bottle: The Orly BB Creme is an all-in-one topical cosmetic treatment for your nails. It helps to smooth, moisturize, and brighten natural nails. It isn’t meant to be used with or as a base coat or top coat. So it is literally one to two coats of polish (depending on how peachy you want your nails to look) and you are done.

Tinkle Eyebrow Razor

Tinkle Eyebrow RazorsIf you need a good laugh, but also some good points on why you should be using these check out this Youtube video from Michelle Money. A month or so ago, I learned about these little razors from some co-workers and we all watched the video and were totally convinced. I ordered a pack and have been using them ever since. I used to get my eyebrows waxed but we cut that expense out of our budget for now 🙁 So, tweezing it is. Well these little guys cut down on that time consuming task. I still use tweezers but shaving is much quicker for areas like in between your eyebrows, your upper lip, and anywhere else you have unwanted hair on the lower half of your face. My hair has not grown back thicker or darker as many would fear. These razors are cheap so I would recommend at least giving it a try and if you hate it, well you aren’t out that much money.

Coconut Oil

doterra Fractionated Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has many amazing benefits on its own and is a great carrier oil to dilute other stronger essential oils. But, one of my more recent discoveries is using coconut oil in lieu of shaving cream. It is seriously so amazing and I will never go back to using anything else! My skin is smooth and moisturized after shaving which are two things I used to never have after shaving. And I don’t even feel like I need to use lotion after so that saves me some time. You must try this, it will change your life! (As quoted by my co-worker that told me to test this out.) You can use regular coconut oil from the store and I assume you will have the same results. I just like that the DoTerra version is already in a liquid form making it quick and easy to use in the shower.

First Birthday Cake Smash

Happy Thursday friends! A while back I posted about Liam’s second birthday party which was a Barnyard Bash. You can check that out here. So, today I want to share a little throw back Thursday with you all and take it back to Liam’s first birthday pictures. We did a cake smash and these photos are some of my most favorite to look back on. first birthday cake smashfirst birthday cake smashWe put a giant cupcake on our You Are Special Today Plate for Liam to eat/smash. This was very cool for me as we had one of these plates growing up and I always loved getting to use it on my birthday. I was so excited that we got our very own for our wedding so we could start our own tradition of using it for special days. The fun part is you can write on the back of the plate all the dates of when use it so you remember each time.  you are special plate At first Liam didn’t think too much of the whole cake idea. We did these pictures last and he was getting tired. I was so worried all of the images would turn out like this next one but luckily this kid likes cake! So, once we got him to realize that he could just go for it he didn’t waste any time. it's my party and i'll cry if i want to cake smash I didn’t want to spend a bunch of money on a cake that was just going to get smashed so I decided to bring my own. I ordered this Giant Cupcake Pan which requires two boxes of cake mix to make (and took me two tries to perfect). For the frosting I used some of the pieces I had from my Wilton Cupcake Decorating Set. Then I just added some colorful sprinkles and a number 1 candle. giant cupcake Liam’s first birthday party theme was a mustache bash so the Lotuz Bumz Mustache cloth diaper was perfect for him to wear for his cake smash pictures. lotuz bumz mustache cloth diaperFor the banner I use the My Minds Eye Chalk Studio Banner and added in the mustaches to match the birthday theme. my minds eye bannerWe had the photos taken at FotoFly here in Utah and they were amazing as usual, I highly recommend them. They do a fantastic job at getting all the details that you want to remember as if it were yesterday. fotofly pictures 1941473_10100147422601011_3141172849446117165_oEverything turned out so well and as I said I just love looking back on this pictures. What fun ways did you celebrate your little ones first birthday?

Balance Grounding Essential Oil Blend

I started using essential oils about six years ago. I was taking medication for anxiety and I hated the way it made me feel! Yea I didn’t worry about things as much but I felt like I didn’t care about things like I normally would. I wanted to try something a little more natural and since I had just been introduced to essential oils I thought I would try the Balance blend offered by dōTERRA. Balance Essential Oil BlendEvery morning and every night I would put a small amount of Balance and Lavender Oil behind my ears and on the bottom of my feet. It really helped calm my nerves during the day and sleep better at night. There was definitely a time when I needed medication for my anxiety and I am grateful that I was able to use it to help me. However, once I had eliminated some of the stressful factors in life this oil was the perfect solution for the occasional restless nights and stressful days.  I would highly recommend it if you need something to help you relax. That being said if you think you have anxiety that needs to be treated by a doctor be sure to go in and see someone.

Lately, I have been using this oil on my toddler to help with those two year old tantrums and I think it really helps! Of course there are still melt downs over ridiculous things like what shirt we are wearing or brushing our teeth. But, I do think that the melt downs are less frequent and less dramatic since we started using this blend. A little for mommy and baby goes a long way.

Bye Bye, Binky

Liam has been a binky baby ever since he was teeny tiny. I always said I would make him give it up when he turned one but that time came and went and here we are at two still using it.  We did get down to only using the binky at nap and bedtime. But, over the last few weeks he has chewing on them to the point of being down to the last one and it was on the verge of being a choking hazard. Since I have been wanting to break this habit I decided it was time to pull the plug rather than buy more. Enter Hulk the Binky Bear!  A while back a co-worker said she had taken her son to Build-A-Bear to make a binky bear and I thought that was such a great idea. Liam even got a gift card to go there for his birthday so it was perfect. We had been talking about the binky going away for a while now and yesterday I told him that we were going to go put his binky into a bear and say bye bye.  Apparently this is a thing because the gal at the store knew all about making binky bears and was so great with Liam. After much deliberation he picked the Hulk bear with a button that says “hulk smash!” and a six pack! 😂 His binky is in the bears hand so he can feel right where it is. Liam said bye bye to his binky and put it in the bear with no tears. Then we picked out som Avengers pajamas since he will be for night time snuggles. He carried his bear all the way to the car in that big box.

Through out the rest of the day Liam played with his new bear. He kept saying “it’s okay bear” and hugging him. We had a little trouble getting to sleep without the binky but nothing bad enough to make me regret my decision (yet, fingers crossed). Hopefully, this will do the trick and we can mark this phase of growing up off the list. What tricks did you try to wean your child off the binky? What worked and didn’t work?

4th of July Weekend & the Peppermint Oil Giveaway Winner

I hope everyone had a happy and safe holiday weekend. We spent ours at Bear Lake with family and friends and it was such a blast! We got to sneak away on Wednesday night so we had an extra long weekend and it was just what we needed.

Giveaway – Doterra Peppermint Essential Oil

About a week ago I came down with a summer cold that was floating around work. After using some of my DoTerra Oils to clear it up it reminded me how great essential oils are for colds and so many other things, and I wanted to share! I am planning to share some of my personal experiences with essential oils on my blog moving forward. But, to start things off I want to share one of my favorite oils with one of you.peppermint oilPeppermint oil can be used for so many things. Here are a few ways I have personally used it:

  • Rub it on your stomach for cramps or stomach aches. When I was first pregnant I had really bad cramps for weeks. Peppermint worked great to relieve my discomfort.
  • Rub it on the back of the neck. I sometimes use just peppermint to help with headaches or sometimes I add some lemon oil and it helps wake me up a bit.
  • Inhale peppermint oil to clear sinus congestion. I usually combine peppermint, melaleuca, and eucalyptus. I either put a few drops of each in my hands and cup them to my nose, breathing deeply or add them to a hot bath.
  • Add a few drops to a bit of water for a refreshing mouth rise. I tried this one time when we were out of mouth wash and now I prefer it.

Here is a link to the product information page on peppermint from DoTerra.  If you are interested in getting more information or purchasing essential oils you can do so here.  Or leave a comment with any questions you might have and I will get back to. peppermint oil giveawayNow for the important part, the giveaway! Follow me on Facebook and Instagram for a change to win a 15ML bottle of DoTerra Peppermint Essential Oil. The giveaway starts today, June 22nd and ends on Saturday June 28th. Happy Father’s Day

This weekend is Father’s Day and so I wanted to take a minute to share how grateful I am for the amazing dads in my life. We have a fun flash back Friday, Father’s Day edition over on Figures and Fabulous. Head over there to see some cute pictures and sentiments about my dad. I also wanted to take a moment to introduce my amazing husband and Liam’s awesome daddy, Rob.    Rob and I met 13 years ago when we were just sweet young things. We dated through the end of high school (for me as he is older) and college. We even did long distance for a year while I went to college out of state. We have certainly had our ups and downs but I have to say our relationship has definitely gotten stronger over the years and he is an amazing husband and dad.   I think he often worries if he is a good daddy or not but I think he is great! I try to tell him often how much Liam and I appreciate all that he does for us. Since I have a hard time verbally expressing my feelings I am striving to say those things more often. Watching him grow as a man and dad has been such a privilege.   I look forward to the years ahead. To growing old together and dealing with all life has to throw at us. I know Liam and I are stronger with you by our sides. Thanks again for everything you do. We love you so much!

How to Style Hair for Seven Days In Between Washes

I know I have mentioned it before but if you are washing your hair every day you NEED to stop! If you need some good reasons why check out this post from allwomentalk. Trust me I know it seems impossible, I used to wash my hair daily and I know the feeling. Start slow and just wash your hair every other day. Your hair will adjust I promise. I went from washing every day to washing once a week. It took me a good year or more to work up to that. I like to try new braids and styles so I used that as an excuse to skip a wash and try something new. Today I am sharing how I style my hair for seven days in between washes. Hopefully, this will inspire you to try something new on your dirty hair rather than running for your shampoo. Summer is the best time to start spacing out washes since braids and messy buns are great for the pool or hot days outside. How to Style Hair for Seven Days In Between WashesIf you can plan ahead a bit that will help. I work in the office on Mondays, Tuesdays, & Wednesdays so I plan to wash my hair every Monday morning. On the days I work from home or on the weekends my styles vary depending on if I need to leave the house or not. If I have something important on the weekend I can always wash my hair if I really need to but generally I can make it work. Also, I pretty much use dry shampoo everyday except day one. Here is a quick description of each style:

Monday – Straight: I washed my hair in the morning and blew it dry. I started using this blow drying method from the Freckled Fox and it works well for me since my hair is so naturally straight. Plus, it is much quicker and gives me just as much volume as any other blow out method I have tried. straight hairTuesday – Curls: I got my hair a bit damp, wrapped it up Monday night, and Savvy Curls for the win! You can check out my review on the Savvy Curls Headwrap herecurlsWednesday – 2nd Day Curls/Bangs Pulled Back: At this point my hair doesn’t look as good all the way down, so I just pulled my bangs back with some bobby pins. I actually did re-wrap my hair with the Savvy Curls Tuesday night but this picture was taken at the end of a long hot day and the curls didn’t stay as tight as they did the first day. 2nd day curlsThursday – Half Up Crown Braid: My hair still had a little wave left so I decided to wear it half up. I did a dutch braid on each side and tied them together in the back with a clear hair elastic. I struggle with being creative on half up styles so I plan to add some more to the blog here so, for my benefit and yours 😉 crown braidFriday – French Fishtail Bangs/Pony Tail: I love fishtail braids so I pan to do a tutorial on those soon as well. I like to do a french fishtail with my bangs to change up my usual dutch braid. Adding a braid or even something as simple as a twist to your ponytail can help make it more exciting. french fishtail pony Saturday – Dutch Braid: Braids are perfect for dirty hair! You can see my tutorial on the difference between a dutch and a french braid here. Haven’t master either of those yet, keep practicing, and in the mean time do a regular braid and put on a hat to cover your roots if needed. dutch braidSunday – Top Knot: I actually had to make an effort to only style my hair this way once last week. I just love top knots! If you need a tutorial on how to get a good top knot click here.top knot See if you can reduce the number of times you wash your hair by one time next week. Be sure to let me know how it goes either on Facebook or Twitter.
